In an interview on Sirius XM radio, the Inter Miami president revealed his reaction.
Lionel Messi left Paris Saint-Germain last summer after two seasons and decided to completely end his time in Europe. Despite interest from Barcelona and Al-Hilal, the Argentine decided to go to the United States.
Messi chose to join Inter Miami instead of staying in Europe or going to Saudi Arabia. One of the figures who arranged to bring the 2022 FIFA World Cup champion to South Florida after his contract with the Paris team expired was co-owner David Beckham.
In an interview on Sirius XM radio, Beckham shared the story of how he brought about the iconic contract in MLS history.
“That month we knew we would have to make a decision because Leo had announced he was leaving PSG,” Beckham said. “So around 4 or 5 a.m. in Japan, I was in bed and my phone kept ringing. Then I saw, ‘Leo Messi has decided to go to Miami.’ And then I got goosebumps. I jumped up in bed and started crying.”
