Driving down a blacktop road you feel the wind in your hair and smell the soft scents of flowers and trees. You hear the sounds of children laughing, maybe a lawn mower, and other traffic. Over all this, the sound of meowing is heard. Where is it coming from?

Meowing Heard in Storm Drain

“Hmm…I think I see something down there…”

Driving down the street in Prince George, Virginia people in the neighborhood heard an unfamiliar sound. They couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, but the concerned citizens called up a volunteer from “A Cat’s Life Rescue” anyway since neighbors were sure it was meowing they heard. The volunteer went out to investigate to see where the cries were coming from. Neighbors told her that they heard the cries all day but they had no idea where the babies could be.

The woman volunteer soon realized the meowing was coming from below, in the sewer system by a storm drain.

The fire department, EMS, and the water company all came to the rescue! Removing the manhole cover from where they located the cries, they found five little kittens looking back at them. A firefighter went down into the manhole and lifted all five babies to safety in the woman volunteer’s arms. Now they were perfectly safe!

A Cat’s Life Rescue then took the babies to the Animal Welfare League in Arlington to give them better quality care.

Where Are They Now?

At the Kitten College of AWLA where they were originally taken, the five kittens found their new foster homes! Three of them went to our friends at Foster Kitten HQ in the DC area, and the other two siblings went to Foster Kittens of DC. At Foster Kitten HQ, their journey is up on Instagram for all to see. The three babies were named Lock, Shock, and Barrel after the classic Nightmare Before Christmas characters. The other two were David (tuxedo) and Alexis (black), the spitting image of their siblings.

How freaking cute is this? (see below)

Seems fitting after being down in the dark underground of a storm drain. No one knows how the kittens ended up down there, but maybe they just wanted some of Oogie Boogie’s special brew of snake and spider stew?

After just a few weeks, they began to show their personalities. Barrel is full of energy and loves making blanket biscuits. The three siblings also love wrestling with each other after meals, and of course, sleeping.

Lock, Shock, and Barrel Find a Home Together!

All five kittens went to their foster homes until they were ready for adoption. In a wonderful update, Foster Kitten HQ shared that Lock, Shock, and Barrel found a home together!

“It’s the adoption announcement you’ve all been waiting for,” Foster Kitten HQ shared.

Lock, Shock, and Barrel have officially found their forever home, and will be heading there tomorrow – together!!

Yes, that’s right, they have a fantastic new dad who has adopted all three of these sweet babies!”

“They have been the closest of friends since they arrived, and figuring out who to split from who was a really challenging task, but luckily for me they were seen by the right person on here.”

Let’s give a shoutout to the neighborhood who heard the kittens, the volunteer who went looking for them, and the brave first responders for saving them!

“Three of a kind, birds of a feather, now and forever!”
