Robert Taylor refused to join the Finnish team in the life-or-death play-off series to compete for tickets to the EURO 2024 finals this month.
On March 19, the Finnish Football Federation announced that Taylor would stay at Inter Miami instead of focusing on the national team. The 29-year-old star has no health problems, but informed the Finnish coaching staff that he will not participate in this month’s training session.
According to Finnish media, Taylor’s decision comes from the fact that he no longer plays an important role in the national team in the past few years.
However, many Finnish fans believe that the Inter Miami midfielder is still an important piece of the puzzle for his country’s national team. Taylor’s refusal to join the team before a series of important matches for football angered Finnish public opinion.
The 29-year-old midfielder is likely to play for Inter Miami in the next two rounds of MLS, in the context of many players from this club returning to serve the national team. The American Professional Championship still takes place normally while the national teams gather.
Faced with the above information, many Finnish fans demanded that the midfielder born in 1994 be permanently banned from the team. Since the beginning of the season, Taylor has been an important factor in Inter Miami’s attack, alongside Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez. He played as an attacking midfielder and wing striker, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist in 6 appearances.
On March 21, the Finnish team will play the semi-finals of the play-off round to qualify for EURO 2024, facing Wales away from home. The winner of this match will face Poland or Estonia in the play-off final, to compete for a ticket to play in Germany this summer.
