Cristiano Ronaldo recently expressed his opinion on Kylian Mbappe’s situation at Real Madrid, where the young French forward has been given similar privileges to those enjoyed by Ronaldo during his time at the Spanish club. However, the decision to give Mbappe the responsibility of taking free kicks has caused some discomfort among his teammates, many of whom believe that other players are better qualified for the task.
According to media reports, including Marca, Mbappé will take over the free kick taking role for Real Madrid next season. This responsibility was previously held by Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the best free kick takers in football history. However, Mbappé’s selection is seen as controversial given his unimpressive record in taking direct free kicks, with no goals in 9 attempts.
Cristiano Ronaldo commented on the situation in a recent interview, saying: “I understand what Mbappé is going through, as I have been in the same position. When you are seen as the main player, expectations are high, and this can create jealousy within the team. However, it is important that he remains focused and works hard to justify that trust. At a club like Real Madrid, you have to prove yourself every day.”
The decision to give Mbappé this responsibility has also sparked rumours that some Real Madrid players, such as David Alaba and young talent Arda Güler, who have proven track records from free kicks, are unhappy with the choice. Alaba, for example, has six career free kick goals and is seen as a more reliable option.
However, while Mbappe will be given that responsibility, he will not have the same privilege when it comes to taking penalties. That task will continue to fall to Brazilian Vinicius Jr., who was Real Madrid’s main penalty taker last season.
Mbappe’s situation at Real Madrid is being closely watched by both fans and the press as he adapts to life at the Santiago Bernabeu and tries to justify the high expectations placed on him.
